Hi,

My name is John Canny I am 19 years old and I’ve just graduated from Coláiste Éinde.

Music has been my passion for as long as I can remember and I have plenty of experience in nearly all fields, styles and genres.

My main instruments are Piano, Violin/Fiddle, and Drum Kit/Bodhrán/Snare/General Percussion.

PIANO:

I've studied piano for 15 years and have completed the RIAM grades and am studying for the RIAM Piano Teaching Diploma. I have studied piano under various teachers such as DavidSzabo (MCnaG) and Prof. Therése Fahey. I attended Maoin Cheoil na Gaillimhe, playedclassical competitions and concerts and attended RIAM’s Summer intensives. I have a significant amount of Classical experience along with plenty of other styles such as jazz, modern, and even original works. I also play keys in a band with a multitude of differentsounds/styles. I have experience in live playing and am in the process of starting a two piece wedding band with a friend of mine.

VIOLIN:

I started playing trad fiddle in primary school and quickly found a love for it. I then attended lessons under Hugh Kelly and completed my RIAM grades. I also attended trad lessons in Comhlatas at GMA during this time. I was a member of the Galway Youth Orchestra for a number of years, plenty of live concerts and gigs. As regards traditional music, I’ve attended Scoil Acla, a few Fleadhs and I occasionally session in town. I also play other stringed trad instruments such as the mandolin as well. I was also a member of the Galway Trad Orchestra which played regular concerts. Finally, I have worked out in Coláiste Lurgan in Inverin and am a flluent Gaeilgeoir and have played, recorded and appeared in many of the Coláiste Lurgan Music Videos which are all available on Youtube

DRUMS:

I started playing Drum Kit under Brian Ferguson in Knocknacarra over a decade ago and have loved every minute of learning and improving my skills since. I spend my spare time practicing and jamming with friends. I play in a wedding band called ONEMORETIME, with regular gigs around Galway and Dublin. We have a residency in Busker Brownes and play there weekly. I’ve played live all over Galway, Roisín Dubh, The Loft, Nuns Island etc… and around Dublin too! I play Bodhrán and have taught drums in the past.

THEORY AND OTHER:

I have an extensive knowledge of Music Theory and have done the ABRSM theory grades. I’m a Leaving Cert Music H1 student and have helped teach my classmates theory as well. I’ve been an active member of the music society in Éinde and have done various concerts and showcases during my time in the school. I’ve done sound production and engineering courses through Music Generation and have done live Sound techhing and lights for their concerts.

AIM:

I was taught by many different teachers over the years, and I’ve gained a lot of insight into what students want to learn and how to teach them. I aim to teach modern, contemporary keys with an emphasis on theory and fundamental skill rather than grades. This, in my opinion, will keep the student interested and will hopefully start their love of music and performing. If interested I can teach classical pieces, but I am open to any and every genre! I also will teach theory if interested, mainly for leaving cert students.
